Turf problems & SOLUTIONS
INSECT LARVAE
The two most troublesome insect larvae on grass are Leather Jackets (Crane Fly larvae) and Chafer Grubs (Chafer Beetle larvae), which hatch in the soil and feed on grass roots. Severe damage can occur when birds and animals rip up the grass looking for grubs to feed on. Other insect larvae are Frit Fly and St Mark’s Fly.
SOLUTION
During autumn and winter apply TurfSolv® at 2ml in 100ml water per m2 and repeat after 3-5 days. For best treatment apply TurfSolv® at 2ml in 100ml water per m2 every 3-4 weeks. If the larvae occur during spring and summer apply TurfSolv® every 3-4 weeks at 2ml in 100ml water per m2. This promotes a healthy and vigorous grass plant that recovers quickly from insect larvae damage.
GRASS DISEASE
Grass diseases in the UK are caused mainly by fungal pathogens and can occur all year round. Common summer diseases include Anthracnose and Red Thread, which can be an indication of low nutrients in the soil. Fusarium Patch is a common disease of highly maintained grass surfaces in the autumn and winter when moisture sits on the leaf for longer.
SOLUTION
Apply TurfSolv® every 3-4 weeks at 1ml in 100ml water per m2 from March to end September. This treatment optimises soil nutrient availability and strengthens the plant, helping it to resist fungal infection and to recover quickly after damage. During autumn and winter apply TurfSolv® every 3-4 weeks at 2ml in 100ml water per m2 to maintain a healthy soil and plant.
PLANT PARASITIC NEMATODES
There are many beneficial species of nematodes in a healthy soil, e.g. by making nutrients available to the grass. Plant parasitic nematodes, however, during the summer months penetrate grass roots and weaken the grass by feeding on nutrients the plant relies on for healthy growth. The weak grass is susceptible to secondary problems such as disease and slow recovery from wear.
SOLUTION
During early summer apply TurfSolv® at 1ml in 100ml water per m2 and repeat 3-5 days later. Follow up by applying TurfSolv® at 1ml in 100ml water per m2 every 3-4 weeks during the rest of the summer. This encourages the growth of beneficial soil microorganisms that provide a natural control of parasitic nematodes, and also massively strengthens the plant.
FAIRY RINGS | FUNGI
There are three types of Fairy Ring, all caused by fungi. A ring of dark green grass caused by organic matter being broken down and releasing nutrients, a ring of mushrooms from organic matter being broken down, and a ring of bare soil caused by a fungus that coats soil particles in a water-resistant film and the grass dies from drought.
SOLUTION
Spike holes with a garden fork to a depth of 100mm into the ring and flood with a 1:50 (TurfSolv:water) solution of TurfSolv®. Repeat every two weeks until the ring has disappeared and/or normal grass growth recovers. Bare rings will require some grass seed for full recovery of damaged areas.
